Procedures for Women

Breast Replacement

For implant removal surgery an incision is made either around the areola or under the fold of the breast. The capsule around the implant is cut into and the implant is carefully removed. If the implant is silicone-filled, it is inspected for any signs of damage before removal. If the implant is filled with saline, the surgeon may choose to deflate the implant to help removal. The old implants are then replaced with new ones. The scar tissue (capsule) that was around the implant may also be removed (if the implant is not going to be replaced.

If only implants are removed, pain will be minimal. If implants and capsules are removed, the discomfort will be similar to the discomfort experienced after the initial augmentation procedure.

Breast asymmetry may occur after breast implant removal surgery if not replaced. You may be disappointed with the results of breast implant removal surgery. Additional surgery may be necessary to reshape breasts after implant removal. Some women after their breast implants have been removed will need no other breast surgeries, while others may require a breast lift.

You may already have a surgeon or you might be looking at financing options first, either way SurgeryLoans.com can help you understand your options.

Costs

Breast implant revision prices vary depending on the surgeon, geographic location of the practice, and other factors. There is no guarantee that a surgeon who charges higher prices will be more qualified than a surgeon who offers the same procedures for less money. You should choose the doctor you feel most comfortable with. It is also important to ensure the doctor you choose has performed many breast implant revisions before.

The practice’s location may influence the price of the procedure. Patients who live in large cities sometimes travel elsewhere for surgery, where breast implant revision prices are lower.

Other factors specific to the individual breast implant revision may affect the cost of the procedure. Prices may vary depending on how complicated the procedure will be.

Recovery

Women having breast implant revision surgery to replace their implants can expect their post-operative discomfort and recovery time to be similar to that of their primary breast augmentation. Discomfort, swelling, bruising, and itching should be expected, and as with primary breast augmentation, the extent and duration of discomfort depends largely on the size and placement of the implants.

If larger implants were placed, the skin around the breasts may feel tight. It may take several weeks or months for new implants to “settle” into their final position. Altered sensation, such as numbness or tingling, may be present around the incision site, but this should decrease over the following weeks or months.

A compression bra is usually worn for two or more weeks after surgery to prevent fluid accumulation, control swelling and keep the implants in place during the initial healing period. Patients are advised to take additional steps to control swelling and bruising which include applying a cold compress and sleeping with the torso slightly elevated.

Patients recovering from breast implant replacement surgery should refrain from moderate to strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for at least six weeks. Be sure to keep all of your follow-up appointments with your surgeon to avoid unnecessary complications.

Results

If you are undergoing breast implant revision because of complications that have arisen from your primary breast augmentation procedure, you should expect to see an improvement in the appearance of your breasts, and experience relief from any physical symptoms after your revision. Whether your surgical goal is the revision of scar tissue, breast implant removal, or breast implant replacement, you should weigh the risks of the surgical procedure against the benefits of the breast implant revision surgery before making your decision.

After breast augmentation, a woman’s breasts should look and feel natural, but perfect shape and symmetry, as with natural breasts, are rare.
