Chin Implant
Chin Augmentation

Chin Augmentation is a common procedure which brings balance to the facial structure by way of correcting a weak chin due to congenital deficiency, age-related bone resorption or facial trauma. This procedure can be as simple as injecting a temporary soft tissue augmentation filler to implanting a silicone or Porex chin implant, to having a genioplasty.

A weak chin can also make a normal nose appear large and an already prominent nose seem even larger. It may also give the appearance of a ‘fleshy’ neck. On the other hand, a too prominent chin may give the appearance of having too small of a nose or otherwise throwing the face off balance. The end result should be a balanced relationship within the structure of the face.

While chin enhancement can be a relatively simple procedure, it still requires good judgment, skill and a good aesthetic eye.

You may already have a surgeon or you might be looking at financing options first, either way can help you understand your options.

After your chin augmentation surgery, you will need to have someone drive you home.

Expect to experience some discomfort and swelling in the chin and jaw area for several days of your procedure. You will likely have some difficulty with smiling and talking. This is only temporary and you should feel better in a few days.

You may have some bruising around your chin and your neck. Your plastic surgeon’s will give you instructions on brushing your teeth and rinsing your mouth in such a way as to avoid irritating the area.

While recovering from chin surgery is quick compared to other types of facial cosmetic surgery procedures, there will be some restrictions on your activities for a short period after your surgery. Normally, most bruising and swelling should be better in a few days.

If the chin implant was placed using an incision in your mouth, there will probably be restrictions on the types of foods that you can eat for a few days. Soft foods, such as Jell-o or pudding may be recommended. You may also be instructed to drink meal-replacement shakes so you can meet your nutritional requirements without the need for vigorous chewing.

Stitches that are placed in the mouth are often the dissolving kind, which will dissolve in ten days to two weeks. Non-dissolving sutures will have to be removed during one of your follow-up visits to your plastic surgeon.

The results of a chin implant surgery are permanent, but completely reversible if you wish to look as you looked before the surgery. However, very few people feel unhappy with the results. Your profile will be much more harmonious and proportionate. It is very likely that no one will realize that you have an implant under your skin: you will simply look much better and no one will be able to put the finger on what the difference is.
